What if I told you ballet isn’t just for professional dancers? Have you ever considered ballet as a form of exercise?

I started ballet when I was little. I still remember my first experience at around 4 years old—it wasn’t great. I recall that the other children were running around with no clear structure to the lesson. I didn’t return, and it wasn’t until I was 7 years old that I had the chance to try a dance class again at my primary school. My teacher encouraged me to apply for a scholarship at a local dance school, and I was awarded a full scholarship to begin my training. I’m forever grateful to the teacher who suggested the opportunity to me and the teacher who selected me.

When people think of ballet, they often picture Swan Lake, with dancers in tutus, gracefully performing swan arms and arabesques. But ballet is so much more than just a performance. It’s a highly disciplined art form that combines physical strength, mental focus, and emotional expression.

In a ballet class, every exercise focuses on fundamental technique. It helps develop strength, flexibility, posture, and balance. Ballet provides a full-body workout, connecting movement and music in ways that are both challenging and rewarding. Learning ballet requires focus and a growth mindset—skills that extend far beyond the studio. In each class, we memorize steps quickly, execute movements with precision, and work toward constant improvement. It’s tough at times, but incredibly fulfilling.

Music plays a huge role in ballet. Different pieces can trigger varying emotions, shifting the mood of the room and influencing my own expression. Ballet helps you connect with your emotions and builds confidence in your ability to express yourself.

And let’s not forget how ballet can transform your body and mind. It’s an amazing form of exercise that:

  • Improves Posture: Ballet focuses on posture and alignment, which can help with back pain and improve overall body awareness. The core engagement required in every movement helps build strength and stability, leading to better posture both in and out of the studio.

  • Increases Flexibility: The stretching and movement patterns in ballet improve flexibility over time, which can reduce the risk of injury in everyday activities. It’s a fantastic way to improve joint mobility and muscle elasticity.

  • Builds Strength & Endurance: Ballet works the entire body. From your legs to your arms to your core, each movement helps build strength. The stamina required for long routines translates into improved physical endurance, making other forms of exercise feel easier.

  • Reduces Stress & Boosts Mental Focus: Ballet can be incredibly therapeutic. The concentration it requires helps clear your mind and take your focus away from daily worries, offering a form of mindful movement. It’s a beautiful way to relieve stress, improve mental clarity, and elevate your mood.

Ballet is also inclusive and adaptive. It can be modified for different abilities, making it an activity for anyone. We just have to let go of the idea that there’s only one "perfect" way to do it. The skills we learn in ballet can be applied in many areas of life, and it’s a lifelong journey of self-improvement and personal growth.

So, whether you’ve always dreamed of dancing or are looking to improve your fitness, ballet has something to offer. I encourage you to give it a try—there are so many free classes on YouTube, or you can start with a class, workshop, or even by watching a ballet performance. Ballet isn’t just for professional dancers—it’s for all of us.
